Protecting the planet is fundamental to building a resilient, sustainable business.

We are taking action to reduce emissions across our value chain, improve the environmental impact of our products and packaging, strengthen our resilience to climate-related risks and work with suppliers to drive responsible sourcing. Through these priorities, we are supporting our net zero ambitions while creating long-term value for our customers, colleagues and shareholders and the communities we serve.

Goal

Achieve net zero carbon emissions, build our resilience to climate change and minimise environmental impacts across our value chain.

Our strategic objectives

Net zero

  • Reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 42% by FY30 from a FY20 base year.

  • Reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods and upstream transportation and distribution by 25% by FY30 from a FY20 base year.

  • Achieve net zero emissions across our value chain by 2050.

Reducing emissions to achieve net zero

As a market leader in motoring, reducing our emissions is closely linked to how we evolve and scale our business. By increasing the proportion of service-related sales, we shift value creation towards lower-emission activities such as repair, maintenance and extending vehicle lifespans.

In cycling, reducing our emissions reinforces our position as a market leader in one of the most sustainable forms of transport. While cycling already has a low environmental footprint, we still have opportunities to influence emission reductions in product design, supply chains and through customer adoption.

For our direct operations, we prioritise initiatives that achieve absolute reductions in our emissions, improve our energy security and have favourable payback periods.

Packaging

  • Embed own-brand packaging requirements to minimise environmental impact and increase recyclability labelling.

Minimising the impacts of our packaging

With our growing own-brand portfolio, reducing packaging impact is a key area we can directly influence. We are delivering packaging reduction projects that have commercial benefits, increase the recyclability of materials and use of responsibly sourced cardboard and significantly reduce both total plastic use and virgin plastic content.

Climate resilience

  • Consider climate-related physical risks in strategic business decisions.

Climate resilience throughout our value chain

Building resilience to climate change is a vital aspect of our ESG strategy and to the longevity of our business. Many aspects of our business are intrinsically linked to weather conditions including maintaining our large property portfolio and diverse, global supply chains which are exposed to a variety of climate-related risks.

Responsible sourcing

  • Strengthen our responsible sourcing practices by enhancing ESG considerations across purchased goods and services globally.

Buying better through responsible sourcing

We have a strong reputation as a responsible retailer and sourcing our goods and services responsibly is integral to our business model. Responsible sourcing supports the continued fostering of long-term relationships with suppliers, the delivery of wider business goals, and the maintenance of our competitive edge in the market.

ESG in action

Creating faster bike assembly in stores through reduced packaging

More sustainable design is helping to optimise our business by increasing efficiency for colleagues and customers.

Teams from across our business have worked together to significantly reduce packaging – particularly plastic – and make our bikes quicker and easier to build. The first redesigned kids bike models feature 83% less plastic packaging, improved assembly creating an average build time reduction of 28%, and tool-free accessory fitting.
